Orthostatic/postural hypotension and symptom relief

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

recently I've been having a hard time conjuring up new ideas for treatment approaches..

I frequently have orthostatic hypotension in varying severity, most likely due to being sedentary.
However, more often than not, during the brief period that this occurs, I find significant to (near-)complete symptom relief, mainly of the DP/DR components.
Sometimes I spaz and/or black out as well.

Anyway, I was wondering what it could be that happens during orthostatic hypotension that could cause for this, more importantly can it be safely recreated in a prolonged manner?

Haven't gone too deep in to it, but all I can imagine for now would be cerebral hypoxia, which of course is definitely not sustainable.
However, the symptom relief usually comes right after the initial stage of "if I don't find something to hold on too I'm going to fall down"

Perhaps then, it may be related to an overcompensation of cerebral oxygenation that I could imagine would follow suit to cerebral hypoxia.
Hence, perhaps enhancing cerebral oxygenation may be something worth investigating?

Then, of course, also cerebral blood flow may be involved; I was thinking Hydergine might be worth a try?

Yes, this is conjecture, I'm grasping at straws, but hey; gotta entertain something right? Thoughts?

On that note; have any of you come up with ideas lately?

Cheers!

For my ideas, check out my rants at the thread Syntheso started, lol. I feel as though I'm babbling too much but I'm compiling essentially everything I think of, try, or research over there.

I haven't investigated the hypotension, but your hypothesis sounds logical. IF your hypothesis is correct, or even partially correct, this creates some potential therapeutic options worth investigating such as:

  • HBOT
  • Altitude generators/hypoxic tents/living at altitude
  • Intermittent Hypoxic Training (which has been shown to generate new mitochondria, too)
  • concentrated oxygen
  • oxygen generators
  • inclined bed therapy (I have only tried this for at most 2 days in a row, so not a good experiment, but it has helped people with spinal cord injuries, parkinson's, etc)
  • and perhaps: rebounding and/or vibration plates

All of these increase either oxygen or carbon dioxide content (thus increasing oxygen utilization) of the body, as well as blood flow and lymphatic drainage/flow. Interestingly, these are things I have briefly looked into before simply for longevity and/or performance enhancing aspects, yet they seem to be very therapeutic for a variety of disorders. Check this out, some information by Yandell Henderson, Ph.D. on CO2 for various problems:

"Catatonia.---Finally, mention may be made of the extraordinary observations reported by the late A.S. Lovenhart, in which he found that inhalation of carbon dioxide to cases of catatonia induced a temporary restoration of intelligence and mental responsiveness. The simplest explanation of the results in these cases is attained by postulating an habitual contraction of blood-vessels in the brain of the catatonic patient, similar to that in the heart and limbs of the cases discussed in the previous section. If this view is correct, the beneficial effects of the inhalation are due to improvement in the circulation in the brain under the influence of carbon dioxide upon the finer blood vessels."

Sounds interesting, even in plants if u raise the ppm up to 1200% u will get healthier yielding plant production vs natural air. The natural percent of carbon dioxide in the air is around 300ppm so if u tweak it up for humans in small time dosages it would be beneficial for sure. Let me kno how it goes with that I'm really curious thanks..

While obviously you don't want to faint out of existence, in general you are speaking about vasodilation.  This occurs with autonomic nervous system dysregulations.  You see it with PD, treated and untreated.  Generally speaking, Sinemet lowers blood pressure via vasodilation.

So you are saying you have relief from DP/DR when you are in a near fainting state?

Have you tried a sauna - stay in until you are near fainting?

@BPC: Yeah I've been meaning to read over that thread.. A lot of stuff I'm unfamiliar with and have trouble seeing connections to HPPD, albeit them being generally healthy concepts.
Those oxygen therapies are indeed interesting; especially HBOT, however HBOT is rather expensive. I was actually looking at tanked oxygen after reading about HBOT, haha. Seems kind of like a waste of money though, unless it is indeed concentrated.

That's an interesting note on CO2!

@Visual: Hmm yes it does seem to be pointing towards (cerebral) vasodilation. Yes; that is correct, that's when I have brief relief.
I haven't tried a sauna.. Always seems like unnecessary torture to me, haha. But I guess this does warrant further investigation in to vasodilation.

Unfortunately, I've tried several cerebrovasodilators (vinpocetine, ginkgo biloba, that type of stuff), yet have not found relief with them. Perhaps they are not as potent as what is necessary. I'm also not sure how and if exactly cerebrovasodilatory effect is measured, and how one would go about comparing them. Taking regular vasodilators might upset ANS functioning, so that's out of the question. Any ideas?

Well, feeling faint is your measurement gauge.  And, of course, what is really happening with you is yet to be figured.

Suggestions, hummm.   Nitro pills used to be carried by people with angina.  Amyl nitrite was used for this until becoming a recreational drug ('poppers').  Perhaps just try some Viagra ... the vasodilation side effect isn't too bad, lol.

You know, the Viagra idea may have merit - someone on this Facebook group I'm apart of posted dozens of studies on different ED drugs for different disorders because of their effects on cerebral blood flow; he has sleep apnea and was looking into things like that.. don't know if he actually tried them, though.

I think I might slam my head in a hypodermic Co2 Chamber for 30 seconds of solitary confinement.. Hopefully I don't hit the "pass out mode" in return accomplishing non flickers of speckling light orbs for a temporary relief of visuals.. Could this be atomically correct anyone??

What are you talking about? That doesn't even come close to making sense. "hypodermic Co2 Chamber"? Are you just purposely derailing threads?

I'm not asking in an attempt to annoy you, I'm truly perplexed as to why you would continue doing this.

Don't know about "atomically correct" but this might be more politically correct...

BPC: Yes, I'm not saying they don't, just that I rather not bear the obvious effects in order to see improvement. Most certainly not on a chronic basis. That said; it is a PDE5 inhibitor. I'm not sure how close PDE's are related, but perhaps PDE4 inhibitors are worth investigating? Though, I have tried some I believe, and have not experienced any benefits through these. Though, if you want to try it; go ahead :P I'd start with micro-dosing though.

hppd24years; I'm not sure what your intentions are with that gibberish, though it's not contributing to anything good. If it's an attempt at mocking this thread, then the least you could do is constructively criticize the ideas proposed and discussed, so that we can all benefit.

You know, I'm not even joking, I know people who do things like this to increase Co2 levels. There is actually a mask that was designed to stop seizures in 20 seconds by drastically increasing CO2 content in the brain. Some people go to welding shops and fill up bags of CO2 and occasionally breath it, or put their entire body or head in it and report some amazing things. Not saying one should do that, but it's interesting nonetheless.

There's even an Erowid Vault for Carbogen (CO2/O2 mixture)
