Valerian root

Recommended Posts

Was just wondering how safe Valerian root is to use as a supplement. Is there any chance of making my symptoms worse? I've already had my symptoms increase once and I'm not going to go down that road again?

If anyone else knows of any other supplements that don't have any negative effects feel free to add those in as well.

Some people here have used it, and I don't think anyone has said it had a negative impact on their symptoms.

I also tried some herbal sleeping tablets with it in it for a week or so. No impact at all (positive or negative).

It has been mentioned by John Halpern (one of few HPPD researchers) as a possible supplement that may be of use (http://www.neurosoup...n_interview.htm)

I am not aware of any specific natural products specific for HPPD but anything that has a sedative-hypnotic effect similar to the benzodiazepines could be used likely in place of a benzodiazepine. Valerian is one such substance.

Although note that interview may be out of date, since it says SSRIs can help treat HPPD. Not only do they not help treat HPPD, they can actually make it worse. Although Henry Abraham says he would have no problem prescribing SSRIs for depressed patients...

...but I'm getting off topic...

In short, I think it's safe to use.
