Potential Sufferer? What to do?

Hi, i've just joined this site after reading alot of useful information thanks!

I think it's very likely that i have HPPD based on what i've read, i was diagnosed with anxiety, as i told my doctor all my symptoms except for the visuals/objects feeling soft, similar to my acid trips. This is because i was under 18 at the time and i was quite sure my doctor was required to tell my parents. I have visual snow basically 24/7, things breathing, after images after staring at objects, text moves and starts to change colour when i read it, sometimes i struggle to tell the difference between 2 not that similar colours, patterns when looking at a plain wall, hairs on towels and such wiggling, things growing towards me or melting, general acid visuals/feelings basically, along with the usual HPPD added extras.

Basically i was wondering what would be the best way to approach my doctor about this, explain to her why i was lying about it and hopefully get some sort of true diagnosis. And also whether to mention the different medications mentioned on here or might she be suspicious? It's ALOT harder to get prescribed things in the UK that in the US, especially for mental health problems i've noticed.

Any one know what i should do?!

Oh and should i say that i think i know what it is as well, just to get her looking into it and skip alot of hassle, or will i just look like i'm lying? I'm not by the way :P

Or perhaps i would be better with a psychiatrist or something? Someone a little more specialised in mental health and stuff like that. In people's experience what's the best type of person to go to?

A neurologist or a psychiatrist would be obviously preferable, but it is good for your GP to be on your side. I am not completely sure how healthcare works in the UK but he has access to legitimate literature on HPPD if it is the same as the US. Explain to him the problem in a honest fashion and tell how it is disrupting your life, the anxiety or depression it has caused you, etc. He then could refer you to a psychiatrist or a neurologist, and that is probably the best bet. Do the same for any doctor you see for this, the disorder is rare, but now it is not unheard of and not impossible to get any information on it from legitimate sources.

Although, how long have you had the disorder? Help from a professional is a large part of many people's coping with this disorder, for good reason, but should not be an end-all.

He should help, if anything show him the forum, that might help convince him of proper treatment...needless to say, you gotta stop smokin, drinkin, doin drugs for a while...dont do what i did, i kept goin and now my symptoms are seriously intruding with my life...let your brain heal, exercise, eat healthy, the last thing you want is DP/DR

Yeah i've quit it all except for the odd half a cig, and that's only because i'm quitting smoking slowly, getting fucked is just not worth it. Also i went to the doctor today and told her everything and she just looked at me in a sort of 'why are you here' kind of way and said there was nothing she could do about it and then gave me a phone number for young people with anxiety to call |: very unhelpful! Should i get myself a psychiatrist then?

I can only give advice based on my personal experience. Just give it time. I've been dealing with this since I was 17 years old (I'm 35 now). It will get better. Either the symptoms will eventually subside or you're brain will adjust and you will get use to it. If the disorder becomes to much to handle then you should seek professional help. What I'm trying to say is that it will become less of burden over time. It took me about 4 years to adjust but eventually my mind compensated to the affliction. The symptoms are still there but at this point in my life it's merely an annoyance. Try to participate in activities that you enjoy, even if you don't feel up to it. I forced myself to continue with my social activities and honestly, if not for my friends, i might have done something stupid and drastic. What I'm trying to say is that it will get better, you just need to give it some time. If you can find a doctor that will work with you...even better. I wish you the best of luck.
