About 5-htp and sensitivity to light

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I've been suffering from hppd and anxiety for about roughly 6 months now. I wanted to tell you guys that 90% of my anxiety has gone away and I think that this is because I completely stopped using 5-htp or l-tryptophan. I believe it was the main cause for my anxiety attacks and maybe it has even made me develop sleep apnea. I believe it gives good effects on the shorter term, but if you continue to take it in the long term I believe it makes your serotonin transmitters worse. This is because your brain will be used to the extra 5-HT it gets and will start making less 5HT. This is roughly what I have understood after googling a bit. I'm free of 5-htp now for like 2 months. Surprisingly my anxiety has decreased a lot, the only thing that still bothers me is the visual snow and I can feel very tired/exhausted all day. Could be because of depression. So guys, I advice you to not take 5htp >_>

I have a question about light sensitivity though. Do you hppd-sufferers have this symptom as well? When I cross the street at night, the traffic lights and car lights just hurt my eyes. It's blinding and even in daylight the light seems too much for me. My vision has worsened a lot, even though my eyes can still see "very well".

Thanks for reading!

I am 24/7 sensitive to light now but sometimes less sensitive and other times more. My vision has also gotten worse although I can generally see "very well" as well.

I took 5-htp a few times during the first couple of months with hppd and I don`t think it increased my anxiety. I don`t think it affected my visuals either. I remember that it would usually boost my mood and make me think more positive. I could see how using it everyday for an extended period of time could cause a problem though.

I have had it for only 24 years just started into my 25th. I have been asking myself "why the hell didn't I celebrate my anniversary" I I must of forgot or as a true hppder might quote it "BRAIN FOG". THANKS MAN!!

Hi, do you mean u have hppd for 24 years? Or also the light sensitivity? It's really bothering me and 24 years doesnt sound too great >_>

I have had hppd for 24 years and dp/dr with Blue and purple afterimages, tinnitus, anxiety, convulsions, channel vision, wiggly lines, floaters don't count, feeling like I'm tripping on and off, trails, streamers, brain fog, and prob a few I forgot about. However I did exalt in triumph for around 6 years in the 24 years period. Symptoms were at a minimum rarely noticeable. Unfortunately like a boomerang they came back with a vengeance!! I blame it on the coffee drinking caffeine was the culprit.. I stopped drinking it but no changes yet.. I get tracers from reflections now like light reflecting off of anything never had that before.. The only time I get my escape is when I'm sleeping and in my dreams. I have realized I was dreaming in my dreams and starred at things quickly looked away and no afterimage, no hyper sensitivity to light, no anxiety no hppd what so ever. My gfriend said she heard me scream out loud "I don't want to wake up" it felt like such a relief like I never thought about it at all. When I was younger I craved mind alterations now ironically enough I just chase normality.. 24yearsofhppdandstillpraying..

It takes me a long time to fall asleep and i fall sleep at work as well as on the drive home. I'm very lethargic now i use to have unusual energy all my joints kill and muscles where i can barely function. Doing lots of tests to c if i have fibromyalgia, arthritis, and M.S.

The tinnitus is hard to get through while trying to fall asleep. It is full blown H.P.P.D. I JUST PRAY IT WILL START TO SUBSIDE SOON NOW THAT IM OFF COFFEE. TIM HORTON'S NO MORE!!

I have sleeping problems too. I find it very hard to fall asleep even when I'm exhausted and to continue sleeping. I wake up numerous times at night and can fall asleep at daytime easily. I need to get up in 5 hours and can't fall asleep :( I have an appointment at hospital, they think I have sleep apnea. After googling today I think I suffer from chronic hyperventilation too. Hope I can fix a cure for these conditions and feel better again :(

Have you tried using nootropics? I read somewhere yesterday they might help with hppd.

No I have not done any conventional at all including nootropics.. I've done Cannabidials which is a abstract from marijuana without the psychoactive high. It actually calms u down for sure and relaxes u too. I use to use alcohol to relax me and take away anxiety from me but then I was becoming a alcoholic.. Couldn't win then I started drinking coffee for years that caffeine compounded hppd for me like crazy.. Now I'm thirty times worse than before.. Horrible let me say that at the least. Super tired its four in the morning.

um do u have strong visual distortions??

Hey HPPD24YEARS. Did you drink alcohol in that 25 years?

Yes I did drink alcohol it was about the only thing that took me away from fuck-off hppd to be honest. I had to quit alcohol because I was becoming an alcoholic so it was a catch 22 for me unfortunately.. I wish I could smoke pot regularly to be honest if I could only feel the same way on it like I do alcohol I definitely would.
